What is a doula?

The word doula comes from the Greek and refers to a woman
helping another woman.  Historically, it is an experienced mother
guiding a new mother through womanly processes.  Presently,
there are two basic types of doulas in North America- the birth
doula and the postpartum doula.  The roles of each vary from
provider to provider.  But generally birth doulas provide support
during the prenatal period, through the labor and birth and in the
immediate postpartum time.  Postpartum doulas serve the
mother during the newborn phase, usually after she is home from
the birthing center or hospital.
